The Environmental Students Association of the University of Cape Coast, last week celebrated their week cerebration which commenced on the 17th of March, 2014 to the 20th of March, 2014.
The celebration began with an awareness creation to week launching, to an outreach campaign at the Elmina community and then climaxed with a seminar. The week celebration was massively patronized by students, lecturers and the general public.

Mr. Dennis Penu, senior Researcher at the School of Physical Science was the guest speaker for the launch. He spoke on the theme; Our Role as Environmental Stewards. He started his presentation by appreciating the environment as the home for every living creature and calls for its protection and conservation to enhance its sustainability.

He admonished Environmental Science Students of the University of Cape Coast to stand up to the call of Environmental Conservation and be stewards of the environment. He encouraged with the popular quote, ‘if you think you’re to make a change, then try lying side by side to a mosquito’.

He stated that for young people to be environmental stewards, they should set good examples by cutting energy consumption, produce and use sustainable energy, conserve water, buy energy efficient appliances, drive less or use public transport and also improve the use of ICT.

He recommended that the environmental science students must undertake electronic waste awareness campaign and also sign-up for environmental courses online to build their knowledge base as an added advantage in environmental conservation.

He ended with the quote of Dalai Lama which says; It is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them. In place of “others”, we were made to fix in “the environment” and it reads; it is necessary to help the environment, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help the environment, the least we can do is to desist from harming the environment.

The Head of Department, Prof. A.N.M. Pappoe, who deputize as also the Chairman of the launch, admonished the Environmental Science Students to ensure that the knowledge gained impact the communities in which they live.
