The Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), brings 500 young African professionals from across the continent to U.S. universities for six weeks of leadership training in the areas of business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, or public management each year. Competitively selected for this prestigious program, the Fellows represent the continent’s emerging generation of entrepreneurs, community leaders, and public officials. USAID and IREX support Mandela Washington Fellows with continuing professional development opportunities for one year after they return to Africa.

2016 West Africa Regional Conference

The 2016 West Africa Regional Conference, themed ‘Inclusion for Sustainable Development’ hosted 2015 Mandela Washington fellows from 23 African countries in West Africa. The goal of the conference was to reunite fellows after the fellowship experience in the United States and develop a strategy for post fellowship experience. The conference involved Panel discussions, Lightning talks, partnership expo, screening of fellow’s story, pitch competition and other special events.

2015 Mandela Washington Fellow

In 2015, Alfred Godwin Adjabeng was selected as a Mandela Washington Fellow by President Barrack Obama. Mandela Washington Fellowship is conducted as a merit-based open competition. The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking.

As part of the fellowship, the 23 selected fellows traveled to Kampala, Uganda to attend a leadership retreat organized by the MUBS Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and ICT Centres. The Retreat took place from 1-8 May 2014, at Imperial Golf Course Hotel, Entebbe Along the Shores of Lake Victoria.

During the retreat, the fellows shared their experiences and knowledge in the areas that the facilitated deemed important for the management and growth of social entreprises within Africa. Some of the topics covered during the retreat include; Leadership Vision and Mission mapping social needs Collaboration Communication and effective presentation  Team building Writing Business Plans System thinking Managing meetings Managing growth and evaluating Social Impact.

The retreat climaxed with the innovations Award Ceremony that took place on the 9th of May 2014 at Serena Hotel, Kampala where the Fellows were recognized for their contribution towards the improvement of society.  After the retreat, the fellows will continue to benefit from the mentoring, networking, and any other suport to help the Fellows grow and scale up thier social ventures in Africa. The Mentors will provide the support both online and face to face where possible for the next six Months.
